Notes

The monotype is the print that cannot be repeated. You paint onto a plate and press it once, and almost all the ink comes away in that single pass. A second pull is called a ghost and it is always the weaker of the two. The technique turns up in the 1640s, claimed for Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione in Italy and for Antoon Sallaert in Flanders, and it has stayed with painters rather than printers ever since. Blake used it. So did Degas, Pissarro, Gauguin, Klee and Chagall.

This is a head. Black and rust and blue, worked small on a cream sheet with a deckled edge, and nothing on the front says who made it.

The back says 75.
