Notes

Ranleigh was the name on Australia's Art Deco drinks service, the local chrome that dressed a thousand cocktail hours between the wars. This is one of their trays, stamped Ranleigh beside each handle, with the canted corners and fluted brackets of the earlier Deco line and the engine-turned field of overlapping circles that was the house signature, made to catch the light with a glass set on it.

The chrome is still bright and throws its pattern about, with the light scratching and speckle any tray this age earns, a faint hazing to the top that shows in a raking light, and a little wear where the handles are gripped. Marked, dateable and unmistakably Deco, it is the sort of small, useful, good-looking thing that does its job and looks the part doing it.
