Notes

Before plastic and plywood, the places that stored a lot of people's things in a hurry, schools, sports pavilions, factory change rooms, did it in woven wire, so nothing went mouldy in the dark and a caretaker could see at a glance what was where. This is one of those lockers, a tall single column of galvanised mesh, compartment stacked on compartment, each with its own little wire door and latch.

It has the honest, hand-woven look the welded stuff never has, the wire crimped and knuckled together and greyed with age. Cleaned back with a dry brush and the hardware waxed, it keeps its surface oxidation as the record of a long institutional life without a weak joint in it.
