SylvaC was the trade name of Shaw and Copestake of Stoke-on-Trent, the firm that filled British homes through the mid-century with matte-glazed decorative ware, the satin-finish vases and the famous rabbits that turn up on mantelpieces everywhere. This is a vase from that output, in the soft matte creamware the name is known for.
It is honest mass-market pottery rather than studio art, and there is no need to pretend otherwise. Its appeal is the gentle glaze and the period shape, an affordable, likeable piece of twentieth-century England, usually marked SylvaC on the base with a shape number.
