Notes

A small soapstone hippopotamus with a low, heavy body and just enough carving to hold the animal clearly. The underside mark reads PHINEAS, which lifts the piece out of anonymous-souvenir territory and into named handwork.

The strongest lean is Kenya, and specifically the Kisii soapstone tradition around Tabaka, where the soft local stone has long been hand-carved into animals and then rubbed back to the smooth, dense finish that makes the material so distinctive. Soapstone is forgiving enough to shape quickly and dense enough to feel substantial, which is why so much of this carving comes out resolved rather than rough. A simple object, but a very resolved one.
