Notes

A small tobacco box carved with a rider taking a fence at full stretch. The relief catches you first, but the wood is what holds you: a dense burr figure running across the lid, sides and interior, so that even the plain surfaces have movement. Burr is the wild, knotted grain that forms where a tree has grown around a wound or cluster of buds, prized by carvers exactly because it is unpredictable.

The c. 1944 Czechoslovak attribution comes with the object and we keep it qualified, but the wartime date gives it a quiet charge: a small, careful, hand-made thing from a hard year. Made for the hand, compact and tactile, and beautifully resolved when opened.
