Czechoslovakia did something unusual with pressed glass. It put serious designers behind it and made high design at industrial scale, exported all over the world. This bowl is one of those designs, pattern 13154, drawn by Rudolf Jurnikl in 1962 for Rudolfova Hut, one of the works in the Sklo Union group, and recorded in Marcus Newhall's reference work Sklo Union, Art Before Industry. It is pressed into a crisp eight-pointed star, the lobes turned up around a clear well, here in a warm amber.

Pressed glass of this kind was never signed, read instead by its pattern, which is exactly how this one is placed, a documented Jurnikl form with its number and its date. A piece of Cold War design that was quietly excellent and is only now being properly credited.
