Notes

Someone in a Murano furnace took a leaf as a brief and answered it in fire. The glass is a warm orange poured over white, with a fine dust of gold aventurine suspended right through it, so the dish shifts from warm orange to ember as the light moves. Aventurine is a Murano speciality, copper caught as tiny gold flecks in the glass, and it is the giveaway that names the island even when nothing else does. The gold-fleck leaf and shell dishes of this kind are the type Alfredo Barbini and Archimede Seguso made, though unsigned this one stays attributed to Murano rather than to either hand.

There is no signature, which is ordinary for the small beautiful things Murano made by the thousand and signed almost none of. The cased white underside and the rough pontil are the maker's fingerprints instead. Unsigned, in the Murano manner, and whole after seventy-odd years, which for thin blown glass is its own small luck.
