The glaze is the whole story. Crystalline glaze is the one potters cannot fully command: the surface is engineered so that crystals actually grow in the melt as the kiln cools, fans of zinc silicate blooming where they please. It runs like water in the firing, has to be caught on a pedestal, and is held for hours in a narrow window of heat to draw the crystals out. Small changes in temperature or timing send it somewhere else entirely, so no two pieces, and no two firings, ever come out the same.

This one is marked Chenco Inc., hand made in the USA, and signed by its decorator, J. Chen. The maker is barely documented, which is its own kind of honesty: a small American studio, a person who put their name to the work, and a glaze that bloomed once, this way, and will not be repeated.
