Notes

Before a bathroom was a room, shaving happened standing up in a bedroom at a stand like this one, with a mirror tilted to catch the light, a top for the bowl and the strop, a drawer for the razor and a cupboard below for the jug. It was not a quick job and it happened every single morning, and then plumbing arrived and the whole object class went extinct inside a generation.

The mirror is the one it was made with, and the silvering has gone back across most of the plate so that it suggests a reflection rather than giving you one. There is no recovering that and no reason to want to. The top was refinished because a bowl stood in one place long enough to leave its mark in the timber, and you can still feel where.
