Notes

These were made as puppets first and still read that way, even at rest. The heads and arms remain articulated. The stands are later and permanent, added to steady fragile wood and make the pair displayable, but they do not cancel the original function: if anything they let the posture and costume stay legible. Javanese rod puppets belong to the wayang golek tradition of carved performing figures, worked by rods from below and dressed in real cloth.

Batik, carving and gesture all matter here, and one figure never quite lands without the other. Together they read as a paused scene rather than a decorative pair. Sold on their display stands.
