Gundars Lusis left Latvia as a teenager, came through a displaced-persons camp in Germany and reached Australia in 1949. By 1956 he was making pottery in a garage in Camberwell, working alone, and signing it Gunda because he thought Australians would manage that more easily than his own name. The studio ran for two decades on slip-cast earthenware in a sleek post-war European line, sold into the homes and gift shops of a country still deciding what modern looked like.

This bowl comes from that world. The Gunda mark is there with the number 46, which is the model and not a year. The shape is the interest: clean, considered, a little severe, the work of someone who had carried one continent's taste to another and made something that belonged to both.
