Notes

This was once framed as part of a complete surviving paper, then taken out and reframed as the front page alone. The appeal is not only wartime ephemera, it is the compression of a world event into one sheet of newsprint. Headline, portraits, date, relief, triumph, propaganda and exhaustion, all sitting there at once.

Dated Wednesday 15 August 1945, the day Japan's surrender was announced and the Second World War effectively ended. A front page from the day peace was declared carries more charge than nostalgia can account for. The paper had a single afternoon to turn the end of a six-year war into type, and you can feel the speed of it in the layout. That it travelled from Canada and surfaced in the South Island of New Zealand only adds to the sense of an object that has outlived its moment and kept moving.
