Cloud glass was George Davidson's invention, introduced in Gateshead in the early 1920s: molten coloured glass with a darker glass swirled through it at the last moment, so every piece comes out marbled differently and no two are the same. It poured out of Tyneside through the Art Deco years, and a great deal of it sailed straight to Australia, which is why so much is here.

This bowl is green glass clouded with purple-amethyst, ribbed, with a rolled rim, that streaked stormy surface the name describes. Davidson rarely marked the glass, identifying it by shape instead, so it is read by its look and its weight rather than a stamp. A piece of British Deco wearing its own unrepeatable pattern.
