Notes

Spain turned these out through the sixties and seventies for bars, beach flats and the restaurants going up along the coast. The trade files them under Spanish brutalist, calls the model the Marbella and gives it to Confonorm. Nobody signed them.

The seat is one plank, dished out by hand with a horn left standing at each end. Three legs splay into it and a strap of hand-forged iron runs round them on riveted collars to take a boot. Put the two seats side by side and they are not the same width, because they were cut by eye.

Most dealers list these as oak. The sawn end of ours is elm, ring-porous, no ray fleck, pores running in wavy bands. Elm is what you use when you have to drill three leg mortises into a wide seat and never want it to split.

Oiled for their next life.
