The form is an inverted U, woven in one piece, a knotted panel across the top and two more dropping down either side of the opening, with long skirts of wrapped cord falling from all three, so that anyone going in or out walked through them.

Turkmen weavers call this a kapunuk and theirs are dark red and geometric. This one is drawn in the language of Fars, in the south of Iran, where the Qashqa'i and the Lurs weave and where lions have been a subject long enough to have a literature of their own. Across the top panel are human figures with their arms raised, facing each other over lions and camels and small birds, on an ivory ground inside a band of hooked crosses. On each side panel a figure stands holding a staff, one of them in dark blue under a red crown. Along the lower edges, a row of camels walking.

Borrowing a form from somewhere else is the most Fars thing about it. Weavers there have always taken designs from outside and made them their own, and a chief's commission, a town workshop and a tent can share a motif and tell you nothing about which is which.

The reds and the ivory look like madder and undyed wool. The bright coral and the bright yellow do not, which puts it in the second half of the last century rather than earlier.
